MOTHS IN SOUTH CUMBRIA
Poplar Hawkmoth Pale Tussock larva Buff Arches Small Elephant Hawkmoth

About 720 species of macro-moth have been recorded in the county, which is around one-fifth of the national total of species. The following is a moth list, compiled over the last five years, from an urban garden in west Ulverston; there is some woodland close by and a nearby stream. With nearly 200 species of macro-moth, it shows the potential and fascination of studying moths around the garden.

Species numbered in red are believed to be first records for Ulverston (there was already a very exhaustive list to the mid-1980's compiled by Ted Hancock and Bill Kydd). Species in blue are local species in Cumbria. Species marked * are local species in a national context. Numbers are from Bradley and Fletcher.
