ABOUT CUMBRIA

Cumbria is enormously rich in wildlife and has a tremendous variety of habitats and a huge variation in climate. It has more SSSI's (about 227) than any other English county and the greatest area of land (about 140 ha) under SSI notification. The igneous rocks of the central Lakes are surrounded by bands of slate, limestone and sandstone. These create soil and vegetation types of great variety, at heights ranging from over 1000 metres down to sea level. Although noted for its mountains, lakes, and valleys, Cumbra also has a long coastline that affords excellent dune systems, sandstone cliffs, coastal lowland with internationally rare raised bogs and estuaries of international importance. No other county has such a diversity of bird habitat for example.
