When standing on Birkrigg it seems you are at the centre of a vast hemisphere of sky, with clouds towering thousands of feet above the hills. Because of its coastal position between Morecambe Bay and the Lake District, the light on Birkrigg is often rather special and is beloved by artists and photographers. Constable would have had many big cloudscapes to paint and Turner, who was said by Ruskin to be able to "paint light", would have been in his element. Birkrigg is in fact a "theatre of light" putting on different performances depending on the time of year and time of day, as the following images demonstrate (I have many of these so I intend to change the selection from time to time).
